- 180 mlWater

Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 190 °C (375 °F).
- Wash apples, core and slice about 5 mm thick (peeling optional).

Toast the crumbs
- Melt butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
- Add breadcrumbs and toast, stirring, 3–5 minutes until golden and aromatic.

Combine and sweeten
- Stir in cinnamon and sugar to the toasted crumbs.
- Add the sliced apples and deglaze with 180 ml water, warm briefly so the sugar dissolves.

Bake
- If the skillet is ovenproof, cover it and place it in the oven. If not, transfer to a greased baking dish (20–24 cm) and cover.
- Bake covered 30–40 minutes until apples are tender. If the mixture becomes too dry while baking, add another 60 ml water.
- Let cool briefly before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
