Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 160°C (325°F). Grease a 23 x 23 cm (9 x 9 in) baking pan.
- Peel (optional) and chop the apples. Coarsely chop the walnuts if not already chopped.

Make the batter
- Beat the sugar and egg until smooth and slightly fluffy.
- Beat in the flour, baking powder, salt and vanilla until combined.
- Fold in the chopped walnuts and apples.

Bake
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake at 160°C for about 30 minutes until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly, cut into portions and serve warm or at room temperature.
