Prepare
- Preheat the oven to 175 °C (350 °F).
- Grease a 23 x 23 cm (9 x 9 inch) square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Make the batter
- Whisk the eggs in a medium bowl until lighter in color.
- Add the sugar, melted butter and cocoa powder and mix well.
- Add flour, salt, baking powder and vanilla and fold with a spatula until just combined.
- Fold in chopped walnuts if using.

Bake
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for about 20 minutes. Do a skewer test — the center should be slightly moist but not raw.
- Remove from the oven, let cool briefly in the pan, then cut into squares and serve.
