Prepare
- Let the eggs and butter sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 165 °C (325 °F).
- Grease a 23 x 23 cm (9-inch) square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Sift dry ingredients
- Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl and set aside.

Make chocolate mixture
- Combine butter, sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Add half of the chocolate chips (about 170 g) and the vanilla and stir until smooth and glossy.

Finish batter
- Transfer the chocolate mixture to a large bowl.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Gradually blend in the flour mixture until combined.
- Stir in the remaining chocolate chips (about 170 g) and chopped nuts if using.

Bake
- Spread the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 165 °C (325 °F) for 30–35 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool completely before cutting into 16 squares (about 2¼"/5.7 cm each).
