Preparation
- Prepare all ingredients. If using canned butter beans, drain and rinse them.
- Optional: have 1 tbsp cooking oil ready for frying.

Brown the sausages
- Heat a large heavy-based casserole over medium-high heat.
- Add the oil (1 tbsp) and the 8 sausages and brown all over for about 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally.

Finish sauce and simmer
- Stir the jar of tomato sauce into the browned sausages.
- Add the drained butter beans, 1 tbsp black treacle (or 1 tbsp brown sugar) and 1 tsp English mustard, stirring well.
- Bring to a simmer, cover and cook on low heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

- Serve hot with crusty bread or rice.
- Season with freshly ground pepper to taste.
