- 450 gGround beef
- 300 gOnion
- 42 gButter
- 4 gCornstarch
- 50 mlWater
- 2.5 gSalt
- 1.15 gPepper
- 1.1 gNutmeg

Caramelize the onions
- 1) Grate half an onion and set aside; slice the remaining onions thinly.
- 2) Melt 1 tbsp butter in a large pan over medium-low heat.
- 3) Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until soft and golden brown.

Prepare the meat mixture
- 1) In a bowl combine the ground beef, the grated half onion, salt, pepper, nutmeg and cornstarch.
- 2) Add 50 ml water and mix briefly until the mixture holds together.
- 3) Shape into a log and cut into 6 patties. Score a light crosshatch on each patty with a knife.

Fry patties & serve
- 1) Heat 2 tbsp butter in a large pan over high heat.
- 2) Brown the patties on both sides until well colored.
- 3) Lower the heat and cook another 2–3 minutes until done.
- 4) Serve with the caramelized onions. Good with potatoes, stewed peas and brown sauce or on bread.
