- In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the spicy Italian sausage (removed from casings), breaking it into small pieces with a spoon.

- In the same or another skillet, cook the smoked bacon over medium heat until crisp.
- Drain on paper towels and set aside.

Simmer broth and vegetables
- Combine water and chicken broth in a large pot and bring to a boil.
- Add cubed potatoes, chopped onion and crushed garlic.
- Simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 12–15 minutes.

Add meats
- Add the cooked sausage and bacon to the pot.
- Simmer together for 10 minutes to blend flavors.

Finish with greens and cream
- Stir in the chopped kale (or Swiss chard) and the heavy cream.
- Season with salt and pepper; heat through without boiling. Serve hot.
