Mix dry ingredients
- Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and ground nutmeg in a bowl and set aside.

Beat wet ingredients and combine
- Beat the melted and slightly cooled shortening with the packed brown sugar until well combined.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract.
- Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until a uniform dough forms.

Shape and chill
- Shape dough into a log about 1½ inches (≈ 3.8 cm) in diameter.
- Wrap in wax paper or foil and chill for 4 hours or overnight.

Preheat and prepare baking sheets
- Preheat oven to 180 °C (375 °F).
- Lightly grease two baking sheets or line with parchment.

Slice and bake
- Slice the log into ¼ inch (≈ 6 mm) thick slices and place about 1 inch (≈ 2.5 cm) apart on the baking sheets.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until lightly colored at the edges.
- Cool on wire racks.
